Nearly one million children in Gaza have been exposed to the trauma of war, the consequences of which may last a lifetime. They have lost parents and other family members, their homes and schools, and the parks and playgrounds that once filled their days with laughter. Amid such devastation, a sheet of paper, coloured pencils, a safe space and a moment of tranquillity can offer children a way to express themselves and imagine a different future. This year, we dedicate our calendar to them: to give their voices and creativity a place in the world, and to remind us that they are the best part of us. They represent our future, and in their eyes, we can glimpse our own dreams.

Inspired by UNICEF’s The Gaza We Want initiative, which invited children in Gaza to share their visions for the future, this calendar brings together paintings created by the children themselves. Ranging in age from six to sixteen, the young artists express, in a variety of styles and colours, how they see their home and what they wish for it. Their work offers a glimpse of the world they imagine, despite the bleakness of the present and the hardship they have endured.

By sharing their art, we hope to give these children a platform to be seen and heard, to celebrate their creativity and to keep their experiences and aspirations in the public eye. The calendar is also an invitation to look beyond the statistics of war and destruction and recognise the individual children behind them: their talents, their imaginations and their right to a childhood, to safety and to a future.

As you mark the days of the coming year, may the vivid colours of these paintings remind you of the young people behind the brushstrokes and the lives that lie beyond the headlines. May their drawings encourage us to listen more closely to their voices and to work towards a future in which the children of Gaza and Palestine can grow up in freedom and dignity.

https://educationalbookshop.com/products/calendar-2027-the-gaza-we-want-children-s-dreams-in-painting
